Recycling end-of-pipe waste streams

For a chemical company, VITO investigated the suitability of in-process membrane technology. The successfully met challenge was to re-use an end-of-pipe waste stream as a process stream.

Separation and recycling of detergents

VITO was involved in a project that focused on improving the quality of rinsing water containing excessive quantities of detergents. Further pilot testing was performed in close collaboration with the membrane manufacturer. Within a period of 2 years the project has been fully implemented on an industrial scale.

Desalination of organic waste stream

In conventional chemistry, glucose or similar streams can be fermented in a pure form. Starting from biomass hydrolysate, the challenge is desalination. Ion Exchange (IEX) is a proven technology for this application. However, it requires the use of chemicals and produces a waste stream while regenerating. VITO tested capacitive deionization (CDI). This resulted in a desalinated feed for the fermentation.
