VITO is the reference laboratory for air measurements in Flanders. The air measurement team wants to further deploy innovative sensor techniques which, in addition to the reference methods and equipment, provide a multitude of data with large spatial and temporal distributions.  This way, personal exposure of the individual can be mapped out and larger areas can be covered spatially. We are currently looking for an enthusiastic junior R&D researcher to join our air quality monitoring team.

  • As a junior researcher, you will be responsible for carrying out several research projects within the themes of air quality and climate.
  • Specifically, you will be working on the improvement and roll-out of innovative sensor measurement systems and networks. This includes measurement aspects, data communication and storage as well as the development of generic data platforms.
  • In addition, your task lies in content-based data analysis, based on a sound knowledge of various data analysis packages.
  • Along with your team, you will generate customer-focused solutions within agreed time and budget limits. You will be responsible for the critical analysis of the results, and will translate the research results into useful advice for the internal project manager and the external client.
  • You will establish and maintain contacts with Flemish/European companies and governments and convert the needs of the client into clear offers and research proposals.
  • Furthermore, you will frequently collaborate in multi-disciplinary teams with other units at VITO, particularly in the field of air quality and health modelling.
  • You hold a Master's degree in (bio-)engineering (other disciplines are possible, provided the required knowledge and skills are met) and you can evidence several years of experience in the required field.
  • You are able to translate research questions into a work plan and to present and report on research results clearly.
  • You have knowledge of environmental and air policies in Europe and Flanders.
  • You have an analytical mind, current IT applications are second-nature to you and your creativity stands out.
  • You have an interest in data analysis and processing and are familiar with R and other software packages for statistical analysis, visualisation and geographical data. In this respect, you will search for the most suitable packages and state-of-the-art techniques for processing data.
  • Furthermore, you are a team player who can adapt easily.
  • You have strong communication skills and are able to express yourself clearly in English and Dutch, both verbally and in writing. A knowledge of French will be an advantage.
  • A competitive salary.
  • A range of benefits in addition to the statutory entitlements, including allowances, insurance, flexible holiday package.
  • Flexible working hours and workplace.
  • Innovation is our key asset, and we give our employees the opportunity to undertake additional training and keep up to date with developments in their specialist field. In fact, we expect this of them.
  • The opportunity to be part of an organisation with an international reputation, known for its advanced technological research and scientific consultancy.
  • The opportunity to actively contribute towards sustainable developments at local, national and global levels.
