With its research program 'Sustainable health', VITO is fully committed to supporting the societal transitions to a more preventive health system. We want you in our team to strengthen our expertise in data science to better translate environmental health research into solutions for local, Flemish and European governments and companies. Does the following range of duties appeal to you?

Within a large European partnership you will be responsible for developing and applying guidelines related to data management (data collection, harmonization, quality control, reporting, sharing and processing). You maintain an overview of experts within and outside VITO who organize data management in a practical manner.
You are familiar with concepts such as FAIR data and Open data, you know the requirements of GDPR, and you want to actively develop new methods to improve data analysis of complex, heterogeneous and decentralized data in Europe.

As a professional you work together with the team on data science projects.

  • You lead the implementation of a work package in European research, coordinate the international team and ensure the timely delivery of results.
  • You work closely with the project manager, your colleagues from the project team, as well as with the customer to determine needs and define customer-oriented solutions within agreed time and budget limits. You translate research results into useful advice for colleagues and the customer.
  • You inspire by making the possibilities of data science and a systems biology approach very tangible for team members.
  • You take the initiative to include 'data thinking' in new research proposals, in consultation with your supervisors and team members
  • You present research and project results on (inter) national forums and also ensure knowledge transfer to team members.
  • You further expand your network with an international dimension with research and valorisation partners with a view to tapping new opportunities for VITO in the field of preventive health.

  • ¬†You have a degree in science, preferably a PhD, and with specialization or relevant experience in data science in life sciences. Additional background knowledge about environmental health and the exposome is valuable.
  • You have broad experience with programming languages such as Python, Perl, Java, C ++, ... and with statistical / mathematical software such as R, Matlab, ...
  • You have experience with data analytic methods for e.g. processing omics data and to gain insight into heterogeneous datasets. Knowledge of machine learning is a plus.
  • You have a customer-oriented attitude and an eye for opportunities.
  • You are a team player and relationship builder who likes to work in an interdisciplinary environment
  • You have strong communication skills and are able to express yourself clearly in English, both orally and in writing.
