You will be involved in several research and knowledge-intensive consultancy projects as an expert on decentralized flexibility integration and market design, including energy communities, local markets, innovative local flexibility services, and network tariff design. Your drive is to use your expertise to help the stakeholders (utilities, regulators, system operators,…) in the decision making process. You will be based in VITO/EnergyVille in Thor Park Genk, Belgium.

Your responsibilities
  • You are involved in several research and knowledge-intensive consultancy projects as an expert team member, possibly as a task or project leader within your area of expertise. 
  • You formulate policy and strategy advice to relevant stakeholders including regulators, policymakers, system operators and industry based on your research.
  • You communicate research and project results in clear and high-quality reports, scientific papers and presentations. 
  • You actively extend your network and to expand the team’s portfolio of knowledge-intensive consultancy projects within your area of expertise or to improve scientific excellence and visibility of the team. 

  • You hold a master degree in Engineering, Economics, or another relevant study. Holding a PhD-degree is a bonus.
  • You have at least 3 years of experience within the energy sector. You have a proven record on the topic.
  • You have factual knowledge of how today's electricity markets are designed and regulated in Belgium and the EU.
  • You are able to detect commercial opportunities to valorize your expertise on energy markets.
  • You can pinpoint the challenges related to electricity market design and devise creative concepts to solve them. 
Additionally, qualifying at (some of) the below-listed points (in order of importance) is considered to give you a competitive edge:
  • You are familiar with gas markets or district heating pricing. 
  • You worked in the energy sector industry (system operator, utility, regulator, or a dedicated consultancy company).
  • You have experience with modelling (local) energy markets, flexibility markets and/or energy communities. 
  • You have experience in project management and in writing tenders or research project proposals.
  • You speak Dutch, French or German.
  • You have experience with building and running unit commitment and economic dispatch models. 
  • You are familiar with python or Julia programming languages.
