On Friday 26 June 2015, the national final of ClimateLaunchpad Belgium took place at Deloitte Antwerp. 7 teams pitched their cleantech idea to tackle climate change in front of a 6-member jury with expertise in innovation, entrepreneurship, sustainability and venture capital. The jury selected the 3 best teams that will represent Belgium at the European final in Amsterdam. The top 10 teams in this European final gain direct access to the Climate-KIC Accelerator programme, the 18-month real life business school. And last but not least: the winner of the European final receives € 10,000, the runner up gets € 5,000 and the idea that comes in third place wins € 2,500.

The Belgian top 3 (all 3 from Flanders) is as follows:
1. C02 Electro Refinery: Deepak Pant, Yolanda Alvarez Gallego & Metin Bulut
2. SolFoGel: Peter Cauwenberg & Lies Eykens
3. GreenTech Recovery: Bart Michielsen, Vesna Middelkoop & Lidia Protasova

The organisation of the Belgian competition of ClimateLaunchpad is in line with the increased focus of VITO on encouraging entrepreneurship in the cleantech sector in Flanders led by Walter Eevers, director Valorisation and strategic partnership. In the sectors biotech and ICTech, Flanders has witnessed many successful start-ups in recent years. It is time for cleantech to follow the same path, because in this sector, there is still a lot of work to do to ensure the future of our society.

Climate-KIC is looking for Europe’s best cleantech ideas to tackle climate change. VITO, as the national lead for Belgium, is organising the second edition of ClimateLaunchpad: Europe’s Largest Cleantech Business Idea Competition. Participants from 28 countries are battling to win the title of best cleantech business idea. This rousing ride leads them through Boot Camps and Coaching Sessions where they sharpen their ideas and prepare the perfect pitch to win the National Final.

Previously in the Belgian competition

Earlier this year, VITO received 29 proposals and selected 10 to join the 2-day Boot camp that took place on 12 and 13 May. The 10 participants were coached by a team of experts, teaching them all they need to know about jumpstarting a business. In the end, 7 team finalists sharpened their ideas and prepared themselves for the national final.

Save the date: European Final on 4 September

The Top 3 of all National finals get a chance to pitch their idea in front of the review board of Climate-KIC Accelerator. The 10 teams selected in the European semi-finals to perform in the Grand Final, will get direct access into Climate-KIC Accelerator without having to pitch to a review board. Besides this, the overall winner of the European final receives € 10,000, the runner up gets € 5,000 and the idea that comes in third place wins € 2,500.
