The growing world population and its related ever-growing food demand requires a close monitoring of the agricultural landscape and timely estimates of crop productions. Crop type maps contribute in this effort, so we know what grows where! Unfortunately such maps are not available in many parts of the world. Hence, we need to find a way how to collect this information elsewhere, preferably as early in the season as possible.
CubeSats, standardized spacecraft platforms which consist of a number of cubes of 10x10x10 cm3, provide practical, reliable, and cost‐effective launch opportunities. To reduce the size of the spacecraft, you also need smaller electronics without reducing their capabilities. Meet HyperScout, a hyperspectral imager observing in 45 visible and near-infrared spectral bands to provide data products for agriculture, forestry, disaster management, etc.
Research into the development of renewable energy in the Belgian electricity grid
As part of Brussels Airport’s Strategic Vision 2040, Brussels Airport Company (BAC) wishes to obtain a realistic picture of ultrafine particulate (UFP) emissions when aircraft take off and land. This is a study for which VITO is using its expertise at BAC’s request.
In 2004, the Flemish Government adopted the Indoor Environment Decree (Binnenmilieubesluit). People spend up to 90% of their time indoors, and this makes the quality of indoor air very important as it may have an effect on health.
Mol, 29 August 2019 – The quality of the potato harvest depends on many factors; obviously the weather conditions, crops protection and adjusted fertilization, but also a correct killing of tops are determinant. By using satellite images in WatchITgrow you can see how green the tops of the potatoes are. Now you can also produce task maps to dose top killing products variably. The new application of WatchITgrow allows a much more effective – and up to 50 percent less – use of chemicals.
On behalf of EIT Raw Materials Project PARADE (Best practices for Pre-demolition Audits ensuring high quality RAwmaterials) we would like to invite you to a series of webinars starting in September 2019 on “Best practices for Pre-demolition audit“. The webinars include interesting presentations on the role of waste audit in circular economy, how to ensure safe materials from demolition, how to assess the recycling and reuse potential of construction and demolition waste and also regional aspects of C&D waste audit. Climate change will have a growing impact on the extinction (or survival) of animal and plant species over the course of the century. In order to respond to future trends and proactively protect biodiversity, VITO is developing a user-friendly online tool that will allow biodiversity managers to better assess the impact of climate change.
VITO plays its role as a knowledge institute within the GBO project and provides an overview of current and expected future research areas within the bio-economy. In addition, VITO examines the relevance of BIOBUILDER® as a tool in new training courses.
Water, a crucial raw material
At the start of October, the H2020 Excess project (FleXible user-CEntric Energy poSitive houseS) was officially initiated in Graz. The project brings together 21 partners from 8 European countries and is coordinated by the Joanneum Research Institute.
VITO and VIL are looking for start-ups and companies that want to tackle the logistical challenges associated with a circular service model.
