Inauguration of the VITO Flash Calciner

7 May 2026

On 7 May, VITO will officially open the Flash Calciner in Mol, a pilot installation that converts clay-rich residual streams into high-quality cement substitutes. This technology paves the way for cement and concrete with a much lower CO2 footprint.

Cement production is currently responsible for around 8% of global CO2 emissions, putting Portland cement under significant pressure. With the Flash Calciner, VITO is creating a unique research infrastructure that enables at least 30% of Portland cement to be replaced by calcined clay, without significant loss of strength and with a substantial reduction in climate impact per tonne of cement.

During the event, we will dive deeper into this innovation and give you the exclusive opportunity to visit the Flash Calciner for the first time.
