VITO organised its annual Clean Vision Summit at the Bijloke in Ghent on Tuesday 14 June 2022. We will be highlighting sustainable technologies that help companies and industries with the development of more efficient business processes, innovative products and smart services for their clients.
The programme

VITO's Clean Vision Summit 2022 will be organised around four themes:

The transition towards a safe, sustainable and affordable energy system is on its way. Our research includes materials and components up to the level of complete energy systems, business models and strategies.

VITO helps governments and companies to make the transition to circular thinking and develops circular business models. We also support innovation that transforms waste streams into raw materials and basic materials for new or existing products.

The Blue Deal was launched as a series of measures to prepare Flanders against water scarcity and drought. VITO's contribution include its water-related tools and innovation projects such as the Water barometer, the WaterArchitect and the Nature Value Explorer.

Preventive and personalised are the characteristics that will define the health system of the future. It will be participatory, data and technology driven, respecting the privacy of citizens.

Ann De Bie
Ann De Bie is a senior journalist for VRT NWS, the newsdesk of Belgium’s Dutch speaking public broadcaster. Mostly she works for the TV-news, but she also writes articles for the news site and occasionally she works for the radionews. She has a wide experience, from political and cultural coverage to recently climate-related issues. Ann is a historian, speaks English, French, Spanish and Dutch.

Dirk Fransaer is Managing Director of VITO, the Flemish Institute for Technological Research, the largest research institute in Belgium in the field of sustainability and cleantech: energy, chemistry, health and materials. VITO focuses on interdisciplinary research into cleantech and pilot installations and demonstrators to de-risk research for companies and thereby strengthen the economic and social fabric. He is author and co-author of more than 30 scientific papers published in national and international journals.
Dirk Fransaer is president of the board of directors of LIBOVITO (a 100 % daughter company in China, Beijing), of VITO Middle East (Qatar) and VITO Arabia (Dubai), member of the board of directors of VITO Asia (Hong Kong), member of the board of SOV Balmatt, member of the board of Clean Vision Invest, also member of the board of directors of the Von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics, president of the Audit Committee and the Board of Programme Evaluation of the University of Antwerp, member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and Arts, and Honorary professor Engineering at KU Leuven.

Julie is a Commercial Engineer from KULeuven and holds a master’s degree in Financial Management from Vlerick Business School. She has several years of experience as a business consultant at Arthur D Little and as a business analyst at Barco. She isa board member of the Belgian textile federation Fedustria, Textirama Foundation, and various educational institutes in Belgium. Julie's expertise lies in knowledge of fibres and sustainable yarns, as well as in circular development projects. Founder of Ariadne Innovation. Ambassador for sustainable textiles.


Karolien Vermeiren

Karolien graduated as a Master in Geography in 2009 and obtained a PhD in Sciences – Geography – in 2015 from KU Leuven (Belgium). During her PhD research she modelled urban expansion and social segregation in developing countries. In 2014 she joined the VITO spatial and dynamical environmental modelling team, first as a researcher developing GIS-based methodologies and models to support the sustainability transition in spatially related challenges. These spatial challenges reach a wide range of topics such as finding best locations for new energy production installations, finding exchange opportunities between demand and offer of water, developing a priority model for potentially polluted soils etc. Since 2018 she is the first contact point of new spatial challenges and questions that reach the team which are supporting Karolien in the exploration of new and innovative strategic research lines in the spatial modelling practices of the team.


Marleen Rombouts

Dr. ir. Marleen Rombouts graduated with a master’s degree in Materials Engineering in 2001 and obtained in 2006 a PhD in Engineering Sciences at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium) in the field of 3D printing. From 2006 to 2016 she worked as a researcher in the Laser Materials Processing group at VITO. In 2016 she joined VITO's Coating and Shaping Technologies group. Her areas of expertise are powder metallurgy (including 3D printing and coating) and materials development for CO2 capture & conversion. She is responsible for the research track on CO2 capture at VITO’s Sustainable Materials Department. She is a principal member of CAPTURE (capture-resources.be) where she is (co-)leading the CO2 capture & separation program.


Peter Wittoeck
Peter Wittoeck
Peter has headed the Climate Change Service at the Environment Directorate-General within the Federal Public Service Health since 2003. In that capacity he serves a dedicated team of about 25 climate policy experts, federal civil servants committed to preparing and implementing Belgian, European and international climate policy, in close dialogue with all other actors in the field. He chairs the Belgian Coordination Working Group on Greenhouse effect of the Coordination Committee for International Environmental Policy (CCIM-CCPIE), where the federal and regional governments of Belgium prepare common positions for the international climate negotiations.
Peter has been heading the Belgian delegations to the UNFCCC negotiations for close to 20 years and represents Belgium in the Working Party for International Environment Issues (Climate Change) of the Council of the European Union.
He regularly lectures on international, European and Belgian climate change policy at different Belgian universities.

Pieter-Jan De Buyck

Pieter-Jan De Buyck graduated as Master of Science in Environmental Engineering Technology from Ghent University in 2016. During his studies, he became passionate about water, and did a master’s thesis on the removal of pharmaceuticals from wastewater treatment plant effluents. He continued with his PhD in the field of rainwater utilization and the influence of construction materials on rainwater quality. In 2022 he joined the VITO WaterClimateHub in Ostend where he tackles the water challenges for industry and society. During his academic career, Pieter-Jan also lectured on environmental legislation. Knowledge that will certainly come in handy when selecting and implementing solutions.


Rob Fabry
Rob Fabry
Rob Fabry is VITO's financial director. Rob started his career with Ford Motor Company, where he held various positions in their Product Development and Design Center in Dearborn. Responsible for the design-to-target strategy, he incorporated the financial targets as an attribute in the early design of vehicles and engines, to ensure that both cost and performance targets were met. His main responsibilities were the Mondeo and Fiesta vehicle lines, and emission programmes for next generations of cleaner diesel engines. Additionally, he held the position of Business Operations Manager in the aftermarket business in Germany and Finance Manager of the national sales company of Sweden.
After an international career of more than 16 years, he returned to Belgium to continue a career in Finance. Firstly, as Global Controller with Federal Mogul Corporation, a company in the automotive aftermarket business, where he supported the transition of the European HQ from Geneva to Antwerp and the expansion of sales to emerging markets. After a switch to the chemical industry in 2014 he became Finance Director for the FMC Corporation EMEA organization, a company in the crop protection market. In this role he supported the strategy transition towards more sustainable chemistry, and the research and development of biopesticides.
Rob joined VITO in 2016 and he focusses on the ongoing transformation of VITO into a transparent, best-in-class, cost effective and well respected research institution. He also serves as board member in the VITO spin-off companies, and oversees VITO’s Clean Vision Invest participation company.

I’m a young entrepreneur, Chief Ecological Officer and co-founder of Go Forest.
Go Forest is a startup within the CO2logic community that helps companies in their transition towards sustainability.
I’ve studied Organizational Psychology and Communication management (UGent) and was voted “Student-Entrepreneur of Ghent” in 2004 with a fashion concept ‘Zikini’.
Next to the fact that I love creating things, I’m driven by a strong sense of injustice in the world and that’s why I’ve decided to use my sales and marketing skills for a greener world.
What drives me the most is impact, real impact, so that at the end of my life, I can look back and know that I truly did something for our planet.
I want to be part of a generation that can guarantee a better world to our children and grandchildren.
I’m not a perfect greenie and that’s exactly the message I want to spread. If everyone makes little changes in their behaviour and gives something back to nature, the world will be a much better and greener place.
I want to inspire entrepreneurs to adopt and apply this idea, without losing their identity.
With Go Forest, we plant trees with impact, for individuals and companies and through our blockchain application, companies can see their trees growing.
It’s super important to build a bridge between the other side of the world and where we are, in order to create involvement and in order to raise awareness about climate change.

Sofie Bracke is a Flemish liberal politician and alderman for Economy, Trade, Port and Sport of the city of Ghent. She obtained a master's degree in political science at Ghent University, which she supplemented with a master's degree in European Studies at the University of Louvain-La-Neuve.
In 2009, after the resignation of Sas Van Rouveroij, she was put forward as his successor in the Ghent College of Mayor and Aldermen and was given the competences Innovation and Work. From January 2013 to December 2018 she was alderman for Civil Affairs and Protocol and in 2019, she was sworn in as alderman for Economy, Trade, Port and Sport.

Roel Vleeschouwers started his career at Hydrochem, heading its environmental laboratory, and then spent 9 years at Ecowater Watrex as a sales manager in the industrial water treatment department. He joined VITO in 2005 and has since worked as a business development manager in the business unit Sustainable Chemistry. Roel holds a degree in Applied Chemistry and Environmental Sciences from KU Leuven.

As policy and project coordinator, bio-engineer Benjamin Clarysse supervises all projects and policy trajectories of Bond Beter Leefmilieu. He also coordinates advice to policymakers and consultation with stakeholders on the five major transition themes (energy, food, mobility, circular economy and spatial planning).


Serge Peeters
Serge Peeters
Serge Peeters joined EnergyVille in 2016, as part of VITO’s Energy Technology Unit. Serge’s charter is the development of business activities linked to the electrical storage systems. With a strong technical background in electronics and his extensive experience in product and business relationship management, he contributes to the valorisation trajectory for VITO’s technologies, research activities and test lab services. His capability in identifying and engaging with the right stakeholders in the battery value chain, led to the development of a new battery management concept recently introduced and referenced as the SmartCell.
Prior to joining VITO/EnergyVille, Serge Peeters spent almost 24 years of his career in electronics and semiconductor companies, more specific in technical, pre-sales and product marketing roles. Serge has a deep knowledge of electronic systems and especially in microprocessors, spending 10 years as field application engineer for the Intel embedded components (like Pentium, i386ex, USB devices, PCI chip set, MLC Flash memory and CAN-Bus controllers). More recently in 2012, he started a mission of 4 years to create and develop the commercial activities of a newly accredited test lab for the testing and certification of PV panels in Belgium, with ambitions for the testing activities in other renewable energy application segments.


Marianne Stranger

Dr. Marianne Stranger holds a master in chemistry and obtained her PhD in Sciences in 2005 from the University of Antwerp in the field indoor and outdoor air quality. In 2005 she became a research coordinator at the University of Antwerp's faculty of Design Sciences (Industrial Design), where she initiated new research activities, national and international collaborations. In 2008 Marianne started working at VITO in the team Air Quality Measurement Systems of the Health Unit, going back to her initial passion: indoor air quality (IAQ). Currently, she is a senior researcher, active in regional, national, European and international research projects. Her activities and expertise are focused on prevention and remediation for good IAQ. They include the organization of (small and large-scale) IAQ assessment studies, targeted studies on source reduction and exposure reduction strategies, the development of strategies for source identification and quantification, as well as the communication of research findings to target groups. Studied indoor environments include the built environment (residences, schools, offices, daycare centers and elderly homes), as well as transport (airplanes, public transport and marine environment). Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic she has specialized more thoroughly in airborne virus transmission in indoor environments, providing expertise to policy makers and various sectors.

Metin Bulut is an expert in the field of catalysis and started his career in the petrochemical industry. He joined VITO in 2010 where he was involved in several research projects related to process intensification. Next to his technological expertise, Metin has relevant experience in market analysis, techno-economic analysis and technology benchmark for sustainable chemistry applications. He has been working as a business development manager at VITO since 2014. Metin holds a doctoral degree in bio-engineering from KU Leuven.

Bruno Reyntjens has been VITO’s Commercial Director since 2017. His career has been versatile with jobs in business development, business and product management as well as product development. Bruno has held international positions, focussing on the functionality of gluten protein at Amylum’s R&D lab in Aalst, on fine chemistry and biofuels at Proviron in Hemiksem/Ostend and on technical polyurethane foams for different niche applications at Recticel in Wetteren. At VITO, Bruno focuses on the transformation of a strongly research driven organization towards a more valorization driven research organization that meets the innovation needs of companies and governments. Bruno also coordinates VITO’s international activities. He holds a degree in bioscience engineering from Ghent University.


Kris Broos
Kris Broos
Dr. Kris Broos graduated as an environmental engineer in 1999 and obtained a PhD in Applied and Biological Sciences in 2003 at KU Leuven (Belgium). After 5 years of environmental research at the CSIRO Land and Water in Australia, Kris moved back to Belgium to work at VITO, the Flemish Institute for Technological Research. With a track record of more than 30 SCI papers and a strong involvement in several large EU projects (H2020, FP7, Interreg, EIT Raw Materials), Kris has become an expert on Sustainable Materials Management. His field of expertise is the transformation of inorganic waste streams into new resources and products. In particular, the recycling of construction and demolition waste, metal slags, and industrial waste streams have been some of his focus areas. Kris has been closely involved in the latest revision of the waste legislation for Flanders, under the authority of the Public Waste Agency of Flanders (OVAM). Currently, he is exploring a new strategic research line on the use of sensor-based technologies and machine learning for the inline characterization of heterogeneous waste streams.

Juan Carlos Alonso joined Bekaert on 1 July 2019. He began his career in 1998 with the Boston Consulting Group where he led projects in Mexico, the US and Australia. In 2006, he joined CEMEX, a global building materials company, to take up the assignment of Global Corporate Strategic Planning Manager, based in Spain. He joined the Comex Group in 2010 as Vice President of Sales & Operations for the US Western Region, before he moved to the Belgian lime and minerals company Lhoist Group where he held various business development and strategy leadership positions with increasing responsibility and scope.
In 2017, Juan Carlos moved to the Imerys Group as Head of the Americas and development regions for the Group’s Monolithic Refractories division and, in parallel, as Global Head of Strategy, Business Development and Marketing for the High Temperature Solutions business.
Juan Carlos Alonso, Mexican national, holds a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from Universidad Panamericana, Mexico City, and an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business, US.

Dr.ir. Jan Vaes holds a master’s degree in materials science and engineering from KU Leuven (Belgium), where he also completed his PhD in electrochemistry. He started as a corrosion consultant to the chemical and pharmaceutical industries before joining imec as an R&D engineer in 2005. In this role, he developed process steps for semiconductor and solar cell manufacturing. In 2012 he started as Technology Director at Hydrogenics On Site Generation division, where he led to the development and engineering of alkaline and PEM water electrolysis systems, from basic component research to full system integration. Since 2018, Jan has been a programme manager in VITO’s Sustainable Chemistry business unit, focusing on electrosynthesis of chemicals and e-fuels for energy storage.

Frank Beckx is the Director of the Knowledge and Lobby Center of Voka, the Flemish employers’ association. He is also Board Member of the Science Center Technopolis and member of the STEM Platform advising the Flemish Government on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) issues.

Elfi Goesaert
Elfi Goesaert holds a doctoral degree in Psychology, doing research in the field of neuroscience on visual perception at KU Leuven (Belgium). After a couple of years as a postdoc looking at the organization of the visual cortex using machine learning techniques, she switched tracks and started at Domus Medica on out-of-hours care. In 2016, she became project manager ICT and eHealth, and worked on several federal and Flemish projects on eHealth and the digitization of healthcare (e.g. medication scheme, GDPR and secure communication in health, eHealth training for health care professionals,… ) , and became vice-chair of the Vitalink Consultation Committee in 2019. She co-managed the digitization of the Domus Medica Health Guide, and started collaborating on the BIBOPP project. In 2021, she joined the VITO Datascience Hub to further develop projects in personalized medicine and prevention.

Dries Van Gheluwe is Business Development Advisor at Port of Antwerp. He is responsible for the development of the NextGen District in which investors are attracted, according to a predefined scope and criteria, including sustainability and circularity. In his role, he also encourages the integration of the various companies on the NextGen District. This involves looking at synergies, cluster reinforcement and integration of the operations.

Carolin Spirinckx is activity leader of the team developing sustainability solutions within the built environment, coordinator of several EU projects, and plays an active role in several arenas promoting the transition to a sustainable and circular built environment.


Tom Van Haren
Tom Van Haren
Tom Van Haren (MSc) graduated as a geologist in 2007 and obtained a Master degree of Environmental Sciences and Technology in 2009. At VITO he has mainly been working on the development of 3D geological models with focus on raw materials and city scale modelling. Currently he is leading a 3D modelling project that brings into focus the urban subsurface of the Antwerp area. An urban subsurface model is a useful starting point to support decision-makers in managing the city’s subsurface. With "Down2Earth" Tom wants to present and explain subsurface data in one central place, so that at an early stage project planners get a better idea of the expected situation of the subsurface and what this means in terms of risks and opportunities for their project.
