As an organisation, we are involved in a whole series of projects that support and accelerate the transition towards a circular economy. Here our focus is not merely on Flanders or Belgium. We also actively apply our expertise and research infrastructure in Europe for projects involving the circular economy.
Buildings and cities
The European H2020 BAMB project brings 15 parties throughout Europe together for one mission – enabling a systemic shift in the building sector by creating circular solutions.
VITO contributes to this project with transition management, business models and life cycle analyses.
For the H2020 project 'Holistic Innovative Solutions for an Efficient Recycling and Recovery of Valuable Raw Materials from Complex Construction and Demolition Waste' (HISER) we help develop and demonstrate novel cost-effective holistic solutions (technological and non-technological) for a higher recovery of raw materials from ever more complex construction and demolition waste (C&DW) by considering circular economy approaches throughout the building value chain (from End-of-Life Buildings to new Buildings).
To support the Belgian construction sector in objectively assessing and reducing the environmental impact of buildings, the three regions have developed the TOTEM tool (Tool to Optimise the Total Environmental impact of Materials) with our help. Every actor in the Belgian construction sector can use TOTEM to identify and limit the environmental impact of buildings from the very start of the design phase.
Antwerp as a European living lab for circular economy with Circular South. Circular South combines a series of district bound experimental initiatives that will bring into urban practice the circular economy. Spreading awareness and encouraging citizens to circular behavior is the focal point. The most sustainable district of Antwerp, New South, will play a leading role in this.
Energy
In the H2020 project 'Circular Business Models for the Solar Power Industry' (CIRCUSOL) we develop, in collaboration with our partners, circular business models for the solar energy sector. Think product-service models, second hand use of solar panels and batteries ...
New business models
The Risk & RACE game offers an exciting and hands-on experience with the opportunities and challenges of the circular economy. It is a table top board game, designed to induce an entrepreneurial mind-set and introduce players to entrepreneurial decision making and circular economy business models. And of course, it is also fun and challenging, just as a game should be!.
Circulator is the 'Circular Business Models Mixer' that we developed together with EIT Raw Materials, Vlaanderen Circulair, TU Delft and Radboud University to help entrepreneurs develop their own circular businessmodel. Discover cases, achetypes and mix them up as you like.
In this project, the companies ETAP, HaTwee, Out Of Use and More will go looking for a suitable circular business model. Together with Start it@KBC, Agoria and Sirris, we are providing strong support for this by linking specific knowledge with experience in process guidance.
The networked collaboration model for this project can also be used in other cases and reinforces the circular innovation landscape in Flanders.
