VITO applies scientific research and technology to support civil protection, defence and the strategic autonomy of Belgium and Europe. Together with governments, industry and national and international partners, we translate research into real-world capabilities. We do so within future-oriented innovation frameworks and a technology ecosystem that enables reliable, mission-focused collaboration.
What we do
VITO develops technological solutions that strengthen Europe’s resilience, operational readiness and autonomy. We contribute to defence and dual-use innovation through European programmes such as the European Defence Fund (EDF) and the European Defence Agency (EDA), complemented by national and regional initiatives.
As an applied research partner, we operate within a triple-helix ecosystem that supports the Belgian and European Defence Technological and Industrial Base (DTIB).
Our work accelerates both research and deployment across domains including materials, CBRNe (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and explosive), energy, digital technologies, environment, autonomous sensing, artificial intelligence, health and infrastructure. In close collaboration with civil authorities, industry and security stakeholders, we combine this with field-relevant validation and demonstration.
To ensure integrity and safe and reliable collaboration, we work with highly secured physical environments and trusted digital systems.

Sensing
Autonomous sensing and decision support
We use satellites, drones, smart sensors, edge processing and advanced AI to deliver real-time situational awareness and decision support. This enables automated monitoring of areas and borders, rapid crisis insights from multiple data sources, observation of critical infrastructure, and environmental and terrain assessment for risk analysis.
Integrated sensing and situational awareness
We integrate sensors, secure data flows and advanced analytics into coherent systems. Data from multiple sources is processed rapidly to support early warning, operational planning and real-time coordination for civil protection and defence.
Analytics and data-driven insights
VITO applies a broad range of analytical methods and technologies to turn complex data into actionable insights. This includes Measurement and Signature Intelligence (MASINT), Geo‑intelligence (GEOINT) and Signal Intelligence (SIGINT), building on extensive experience in signal processing on land, at sea, in the air and from space.
We model terrain and atmospheric processes to better understand and predict environmental dynamics. Through simulations and digital twins, we support operational decision-making and scenario development. Artificial intelligence is also deployed for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR).
Together, these data-driven capabilities enhance risk assessment, crisis response, strategic planning and the resilience of systems and organisations.
Materials
VITO develops and tests materials that improve protection, mobility and durability. Our expertise includes high-performance composites, impact- and blast-resistant structures, rapidly deployable material systems and durability testing under harsh conditions. These technologies contribute to safer infrastructure, lighter platforms and improved survivability.
Energy
Together with research institutes and universities within EnergyVille, VITO designs energy systems for demanding and remote environments. Our work covers hybrid and decentralised power supply, thermal management, advanced batteries, hydrogen concepts and energy storage. These solutions ensure continuous operation, even when grid access is disrupted.
Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and explosive (CBRNe)
VITO offers extensive expertise in CBRNe, focusing on detection technologies, laboratory analytics, sensor development, exposure assessment and environmental impact analysis. These capabilities support preparedness, response and recovery in the event of incidents.
Health
VITO provides health analytics and biomonitoring solutions that support operator safety and performance. This includes stress and performance analysis, biomarker-based monitoring and models for assessing health risks in demanding conditions.
Environment
VITO performs soil assessments and supports the recovery and securing of sites for reuse after threats or contamination. We also deliver environmental intelligence that is critical for recovery and crisis response, strengthening long-term safety and resilience.
Infrastructure
VITO develops solutions for rapid and circular reconstruction, protective structures and resilient infrastructure. These technologies ensure continuity of operations, safe rebuilding and long-term stability after damage or disruption.
