Is there a risk of damage?

During a seismic campaign, the risk of damage is very small. During the seismic campaign, the vibration strength is continuously measured at the nearest home. Hence, the energy of the vibrations, which are emitted by the vibration trucks, is continuously adjusted and it is ensured that the vibrations remain below the standards set by the construction industry. Thus, the impact of the seismic campaign will never be more than any construction work in the vicinity of a home. The location of underground pipelines is also taken into account and the vibrations are monitored here as well. If, after the vibration trucks have passed, clear traces are still visible, then VITO will call in the insurance company for compensation.

When the geothermal power plant on the Balmatt site is restarted, this will be done under even more strictly controlled conditions than before. The insights gained from past operational periods will enable researchers to adjust the plant's operating parameters to minimise the risk of an induced seismic event. The local seismometer network, which is capable of detecting the smallest subsoil movements, has also been considerably expanded. Based on the continuous measurements, the researchers will adjust the operational parameters of the plant when necessary. If nevertheless an perceptible earthquake might occur, causing damage, then VITO will call in the insurance company for compensation.
