Crossbreed and VITO/EnergyVille sign letter of intent for cooperation on STORM District Energy Controller

Project update Erik De Schutter 21 February 2022

Crossbreed and VITO/EnergyVille have formally expressed their intention to cooperate regarding the STORM District Energy Controller technology. Both parties will stipulate their best effort to work towards the signature of a license agreement for STORM District Energy Controller Peak Shaving Tech Transfer from VITO/EnergyVille to Crossbreed. The aim is to conclude this agreement in the first quarter of 2022.

Crossbreed, as solution provider, will use STORM as thermal demand-side management technology in their energy management software Energy OS (https://www.crossbreed.se/crossbreed-energy-os/). Crossbreed will offer this solution in a first instance to district heating network operators on designated EU markets.

STORM District Energy Controller

STORM District Energy Controller is a technology that optimizes operation and therefore improves the profitability and sustainability of district heating networks.

The STORM District Energy Controller is a well-established technology that builds on scientific research carried out by VITO/EnergyVille, conducted in the Horizon 2020 project ‘STORM – Self-organizing Thermal Operational Resource Management’. The project ran from March 2015 to March 2019. It tackled energy efficiency and energy flexibility at the district level by developing an innovative district heating & cooling (DHC) network controller. It was tested and implemented in real life DHC networks in Mijnwater BV in Heerlen (NL) and Rottne in Växjö (SE), demo cases in the H2020 STORM project. In each of the demo sites, a CO2 emission reduction of approximately 11,000 tonnes/year or equivalent to the emissions of approximately 1,400 households was achieved.

The STORM District Energy Controller is a market-ready product, with future developments and new features on the horizon. Additional control features such as supply and return temperature optimization, are currently under development within the Horizon 2020 TEMPO project. These new functionalities will open up new avenues for the optimization of district heating networks.

The STORM District Energy Controller is patented jointly by VITO/EnergyVille and NODA Intelligent Systems AB.
