Based on cell vesicles and the molecular profiles that researchers encounter in them, the risk of specific cardiovascular diseases can be determined. This is before symptoms even occur. VITO perfected the analysis of these bio-markers in the Interreg TTD project.
The €6.1 million project INNO4COV-19 is committed to supporting the commercialization of new products across Europe for combatting COVID-19 over the next two years.
Countries, regions and cities are in need of integrated solutions to achieve their climate objectives and keep up their efforts, while also facing up to the consequences of global warming. VITO has particular knowledge and expertise in fields spanning the whole climate issue. As a provider in this international market, it is even better to align and integrate these climate services. VITO has put its climate services in the spotlight this past autumn, during G-STIC Dubai (at the World Expo) and during COP26 in Glasgow.
The construction of urban green spaces that provide a cooling effect on hot days, removal of paving in rural areas, allowing more rainwater to seep into the soil, forestation to promote carbon storage, etc. These are just a few examples of ecological measures that could protect an urbanised Flanders against the challenges of the 21st century. An online tool developed by VITO – which is freely available – allows both governments and businesses to tangibly and rapidly calculate the social benefits of this. “All it takes is half a day’s work.”
What should our economy look like after the corona crisis? While we wait for a vaccine, the first steps are being taken towards a relaunch strategy. But what effect do these strategies have on our environment and our economy, in the short term and long term? In order to get an answer to that question, VITO and EnergyVille examine two proposed scenarios in two articles.
This article focuses on the importance of making our built environment more sustainable in a post-corona recovery plan. The second article, which you can find at the bottom of this page, discusses possible effects of a 90% economy.
While the corona crisis is still raging, the debate is shifting towards the economic recovery strategy. How does this economic recovery relate to the climate issue? In a paper, EnergyVille zooms in on the importance of making our built environment more sustainable in a post-corona recovery plan and VITO then organised a round table discussion with various thought leaders to discuss this. With one important conclusion: the construction sector will serve as a catalyst for economic recovery after corona.
With the Smart Readiness Indicator, the European Commission commits to Smart Buildings. EnergyVille/VITO supplied vital studies for the development of the Indicator.

The Port of Antwerp is one of the largest ports of Europe. A massive number of ships arrives every day to load and unload as quickly as possible. No time to waste! All these ships have to be allocated an area to load or unload their cargo as quickly as possible. But this is easier said than done! Up till now, port authorities need to rely on spaces that are already allocated and the available AIS (Automatic Identification System) data such as unique identification, position and length information which unfortunately isn’t always as reliable.
That’s why we teamed up with the Port of Antwerp and DroneMatrix to see how we can use remote sensing to determine a ship’s position with high precision in order to help port operators to improve planning and avoid ships being unable to moor at the assigned berth and losing precious time. Discover how drone-based remote sensing allows us to successfully detect, position and dimension ships at the quay walls.

Biorizon co-initiator VITO and project partners Worley België and Flemish Environmental Holding (VMH) have announced the technology they will use to scale up production of bio-aromatics in the LignoValue pilot installation. Furthermore, the project calls for participation in the form of application testing, feedstock testing & demo plant building. More than 30 companies have already signed a letter of intent.
There are many ways to make a house more energy efficient: insulate better, install a heat pump ... The EBECS algorithms of VITO/EnergyVille provide specific advice based on the size of the house and the energy consumption of the residents. Bank-insurer KBC, Cozie’s installation contractors and the energy auditors of Zero emission solutions (ZES) and Janssen Field Services (JFS) are among those already using this service.
In the summer of 2021, the east of our country was hit by devastating floods. The flooding was mapped on a large geographical scale using radar satellite images and a new tool developed by bio-engineer Lisa Landuyt in cooperation with VITO. The tool is available on the Belgian open source platform TerraScope and is useful for both governments and private companies.
