Besir Krasniqi
Principal Scientist
Besir Krasniqi is a Principal Scientist at the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO), specialising in the development of innovative reaction methodologies through the use of synthetic organic electrochemistry. This advanced approach enables access to reaction pathways that are difficult or impossible to achieve using traditional organic synthesis techniques. By precisely controlling the applied potential, current density, and employing advanced electrocatalyst compositions, Krasniqi and his team are able to selectively activate specific functional groups and influence both the regioselectivity and stereoselectivity of chemical reactions.
Synthetic organic electrochemistry also offers significant environmental and sustainability advantages, as it often operates under mild conditions, uses electricity as a clean and renewable energy source, and reduces the reliance on stoichiometric amounts of hazardous reagents.
At VITO, Krasniqi leads the electrochemistry centre of excellence, which is equipped with state-of-the-art technologies, including tools for real-time reaction monitoring, electrode surface characterisation, and high-throughput electrocatalyst screening.
He welcomes collaborations in a wide range of areas, including the synthesis of fine chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and agrochemicals via synthetic organic electrochemistry, as well as research in molecular catalysis, organic redox-flow batteries, and sustainable chemistry initiatives. Interested partners are encouraged to get in touch to explore potential opportunities for collaboration.
