Thermal energy conversion involves the conversion of residual heat and heat from sustainable sources – such as solar energy, biomass or geothermal heat – to other energy carriers, such as electricity, heat at a different temperature level or cold.

Conversion systems also form the link between the various energy networks and may therefore act as energy hubs. Apart from being energy efficient, these system must also be able to respond to supply and demand in the various networks with sufficient flexibility. This research activity focuses on the development, demonstration and implementation of intelligent control for conversion systems and on increasing their efficiency and flexibility. Here VITO/EnergyVille focuses on heat-pump systems, binary systems for the conversion of heat into electricity and heat exchangers.
