Queen Mathilde impressed by innovation and entrepreneurship during visit to VITO
Genuine interest, incisive questions and warm encounters with staff. Her Majesty Queen Mathilde’s visit to VITO on Friday 30 October formed part of the preparations for the future Belgian economic missions that the Queen will lead abroad.
Much to the surprise of the dozens of Visioneers who were waiting for her in a guard of honour, the Queen took plenty of time to have a chat. She was received in the Earth Building by the management team and, during a brief briefing, was introduced to VITO’s activities. However, she had clearly already familiarised herself in advance with the themes and technologies on the agenda.
From research to practical applications
In the pilot hall, four projects were presented that illustrate just how broad and practical VITO’s expertise is. From capturing CO₂ and converting it into carbstone, through heat monitoring and green hydrogen, to CtS technology… The discussions with the VITO experts focused not only on the scientific principles but also on the potential applications, the challenges of upscaling and the potential social and economic impact.
For VITO, it was particularly valuable to have the opportunity to welcome the Queen and introduce her to the dedication and expertise of our researchers and staff. She herself expressed her great appreciation and, whilst doing so, indicated that she is looking forward to a next meeting.
