VITO, Antwerp University, KU Leuven and the Flemish Environment Department form the Flemish hub of EIRENE, the new bio-analytical infrastructure being built in Europe. EIRENE will research how environmental factors contribute to the increase of a number of chronic diseases in Europe.

Flanders has experience with this type of research. For 20 years, VITO has also been part of the Flemish human biomonitoring programme, an assignment from the Flemish government. In this programme, we investigate the impact of chemical substances on human health.

EIRENE, the Research Infrastructure for EnvIRonmental Exposure assessmeNt in Europe is included in the Roadmap 2021 of the ESFRI, the European Strategy Form on Research Infrastructures. It is one of eleven new research infrastructures that will be developed over the next decade at Europe's request.

In EIRENE, the interaction between people and the environment is central. It is a multidisciplinary research project that aims to innovate environmental monitoring, conduct population research into chemical exposure and biological effects, and also focuses on the management, processing and interpretation of data.

EIRENE involves 50 research institutes from 17 countries. The project is coordinated by Masaryk University (Czech Republic). EIRENE builds on the expertise and analytical capacity that have been gathered in the European Human Biomonitoring Network HBM4EU, of which VITO was also a part.
