Successful deep geothermal application using single-well technology opens up new possibilities for sustainable geothermal energy

On 29 April 2026, Mayor Kelly Spillier (Vooruit) of Bredene, together with the children’s town council, took the first dive into the new LAGO Bredene Grasduinen swimming and sports complex. A welcome refreshment after years of preparation and construction. For LAGO Bredene Grasduinen is a pioneering project: no fossil energy is used.

This makes the complex the most sustainable in its sector in Belgium. Part of the energy comes from geothermal heat, drawn directly from a depth of 1.25 km. The system used here, based on a single borehole through which water circulates (a so-called ‘single well’) at this depth, is a first for Europe.

VITO’s expertise in deep geothermal energy, combined with NotusPID’s expertise and LAGO’s innovative mindset, made this project possible. Single-well technology makes sustainable heat accessible in places where conventional geothermal energy (based on hot water extraction from deep underground) is not feasible. The technology is ideally suited to urban and space-constrained locations, with minimal impact on the surrounding landscape and a long service life.

A new world is opening up for this sustainable and local energy source!
