VITO advances BPA-free lignin-based epoxy resins in LEGACY project
VITO has achieved an important milestone in the European LEGACY project by successfully optimising and scaling up several lignin-based, BPA-free epoxy resin formulations. These innovative formulations, entirely free of bisphenol-A (BPA), have undergone thorough laboratory validation and show promising properties for high-performance coating applications.
By leveraging bio-based lignin derivatives as direct replacements for BPA, VITO is contributing to the creation of safer and more sustainable epoxy systems. This achievement not only reduces reliance on fossil resources but also eliminates potentially harmful substances from coating applications.
The project’s next phase will involve applying the selected epoxy formulations to concrete surfaces, followed by comprehensive testing of critical application properties such as adhesion, impact strength, abrasion resistance, and chemical resistance. These tests will also help evaluate the potential release of harmful substances from the coating surface, ensuring both performance and safety.
Within the LEGACY project VITO’s research teams continue to integrate innovative green chemistry and advanced materials testing, while assessing safety and sustainability criteria, to accelerate the real-world adoption of circular, bio-based resin solutions.
The LEGACY project is supported by the European Union and NextGenerationEU through the Belgium Builds Back Circular (BBBC3) initiative, as part of the National Plan for Recovery and Resilience (NPRR).
