From wastewater to value: VITO and NX Filtration make membrane manufacturing more circular
Reducing water consumption, minimising waste and recovering valuable resources are essential steps towards circular industrial production. VITO and NX Filtration investigated how process water from membrane manufacturing could be reused, creating opportunities to further reduce resource consumption and the environmental footprint of membrane production.
Working together towards circular production
NX Filtration develops advanced membrane technologies that enable industries worldwide to filter polluted waters and reuse water more efficiently. Circularity is also an important focus within NX Filtration’s own manufacturing operations.
To explore the possibilities, NX Filtration and VITO looked for practical ways to recover process water and valuable resources while reducing the volume of its water discharge. The collaboration combines NX Filtration's knowledge of advanced membrane manufacturing with VITO's expertise in sustainable process technologies.
From potential to scale-up
The findings are promising. There is potential to recover high-quality water in an economically viable way for internal reuse, while retaining valuable process components that would otherwise be lost. This could reduce dependence on virgin resources and lower the environmental footprint of membrane manufacturing.
The project provides a strong foundation for further development and scale-up, supporting NX Filtration’s ambition to continuously improve the sustainability of its operations.
The approach may also have relevance beyond membrane manufacturing. Many water- and resource-intensive industries generate process streams containing water, chemicals or other valuable components that can potentially be recovered. Keeping these resources in circulation for longer can reduce environmental impact while improving resource efficiency and industrial competitiveness.
