What is InnovAIte?
InnovAIte is a cross-border Interreg project that develops a theoretical and practically applicable framework for responsible AI. This framework is translated into learning pathways, coaching programmes, and living labs across three domains: healthcare, democracy & citizen engagement, and education. The project combines literature research, stakeholder consultation, co-creation, training, and validation through real-world use cases.
Why is it relevant?
The project aims to strengthen both the innovation capacity and trust in AI among SMEs and public-sector organisations. It approaches ethics as an enabler of innovation rather than a constraint. By doing so, InnovAIte promotes inclusive, transparent, and legally compliant AI applications while supporting economic growth and societal progress in the cross-border region.
What are the expected results?
- A theoretical framework and guidelines for ethically and legally responsible AI
- Best practices, checklists, and templates
- Training modules, workshops, and coaching programmes
- Three validated living labs with proof-of-concept applications
- A final report and policy recommendations for stakeholders and policymakers
VITO’s Role in InnovAIte
VITO contributes to the development of the theoretical framework for responsible AI innovation. As part of this work, we examine the relationship between AI adoption and sustainability, identifying potential opportunities and areas that require careful consideration. VITO also acts as a bridge between the theoretical framework and the design of tailored training programmes that address the specific needs of different target groups.
In addition, VITO is closely involved in one of the InnovAIte living labs. These living labs serve as dynamic testing environments where AI applications can be developed, tested, and implemented in a safe and responsible manner. They help align technological innovation with ethical guidelines and societal needs while actively engaging SMEs and public-sector organisations in co-creation and validation processes.
Drawing on its extensive networks and expertise within the healthcare ecosystem in Flanders and Belgium, VITO plays a key role in shaping the Healthcare Living Lab, helping to ensure that responsible AI solutions are developed in response to real-world challenges and opportunities within the healthcare sector.
