ONCOSCREEN

Status: Ongoing Health

The ONCOSCREEN project aims to develop innovative, non-invasive, and accessible technologies for colorectal cancer screening. By collaborating with Mission Cancer projects, it provides risk-stratified screening programs, diagnostic decision support for clinicians, and intelligent monitoring for policymakers. Working with national cancer mission hubs, ONCOSCREEN fosters policy dialogue and research actions. Its tools will be validated through clinical studies involving 4100 participants from 10 European countries. The ultimate goal is to integrate these solutions into public healthcare systems and clinical practice across Europe.

Modern healthcare systems must provide new non-invasive methods for colorectal cancer screening to enhance early detection. These methods should be affordable, accessible, and applicable to large parts of the population to effectively prevent the development of colorectal cancer.

The ONCOSCREEN project addresses this challenge by developing groundbreaking technologies and methods for colorectal cancer screening. In close cooperation with other Mission Cancer projects, ONCOSCREEN will offer solutions for risk-stratified cancer screening programmes for citizens, an integrated diagnostic decision support tool for clinicians, and intelligent monitoring tools for policy makers. The project will collaborate closely with national cancer mission hubs to facilitate policy dialogue on cancer and related research actions.

Extensive clinical studies

The ONCOSCREEN tools will be extensively validated through clinical studies with 4100 European citizens and patients participating from 10 different countries. The views and perspectives of citizens and patients will be incorporated through a participatory co-design approach, further reinforced by open innovation and FAIR data principles. The aim is ultimately to have these solutions adopted by public healthcare systems and integrated into everyday clinical practice across Europe.

VITO's role in ONCOSCREEN

VITO is the lead on developing evidence-based suggestion and analytics for policymakers. VITO also serves as a technical partner to create a clinical knowledge base to identify colorectal cancer biomarkers throughout the project’s duration.
