Planet and VITO extend collaboration to accelerate Earth observation solutions for agriculture and the environment

During the economic mission led by HRH Princess Astrid and in the presence of Minister-President Matthias Diependaele, VITO and Planet Labs PBC — a leading provider of daily Earth observation data and insights — signed an intensive collaboration agreement. VITO and Planet Labs aim to accelerate the use of Earth observation to address global societal challenges in the fields of agriculture, environment, and ecological resilience.

By combining VITO’s advanced analytics and service platforms with Planet’s daily, global satellite imagery and innovative solutions, both organisations will be able to deliver faster and more actionable insights to public and private decision-makers. The collaboration focuses on jointly developing user-friendly applications that enable data-driven decision-making.

As part of this strengthened partnership, VITO will gain access to a broad range of Planet’s products, including the near-daily, global PlanetScope archive, Fusion data, ready-to-use analytic tools (Analysis-Ready PlanetScope), Planetary Variables, and analytical feeds. These will be integrated into VITO’s existing platforms and used to develop tailored solutions. As a result, public and private stakeholders will be able to make better, data-driven decisions.

The right data and insights are essential

“VITO and Planet share the conviction that to protect our planet, we need the right data and insights to understand changes — on a daily, weekly, and longer-term basis,” said Ashley Johnson, President and CFO of Planet. “VITO’s deep expertise in environmental analysis and monitoring, combined with our unique Earth observation data, opens new possibilities to effectively address global challenges. We look forward to jointly developing solutions that have tangible impact.”

One of the first new initiatives within this collaboration is the development of advanced habitat maps based on Planet’s high-resolution imagery. These maps will enable companies and governments worldwide to better understand, measure, and responsibly manage the impact of their activities on biodiversity.

“Our strengthened partnership with Planet marks an important step forward in accelerating the use of Earth observation for the benefit of society,” said Inge Neven, CEO of VITO. “Planet’s daily global imagery perfectly complements VITO’s analytical strength. Together, we enhance our ability to deliver actionable insights that contribute to a more sustainable future.”

Flanders making an international impact

Minister-President Matthias Diependaele emphasised the importance of Flemish expertise in this partnership: “The collaboration between VITO and Planet Labs demonstrates how our research experience and international innovation reinforce each other. By combining VITO’s expertise in data analysis with Planet Labs’ satellite imagery, we can respond faster and more effectively to global challenges in areas such as agriculture and ecology. With this partnership, Flanders supports solutions that make a difference not only locally, but also internationally. It proves that Flemish knowledge and technology can concretely bring a sustainable future closer,” he concluded.
