BIBOPP wins MyData Award for human-centric approach in health technology
Winner in the ‘Technology’ category for promoting a human-driven, ethical approach of personal data use.
By design, BIBOPP gives people control over their own health. Through the free digital platform, users can map their health and create a personal action plan, tailored to their wishes, needs, and the local (care) offerings. Users themselves choose with whom they share their data, such as their GP or researchers. Thanks to this human-centric development and the emphasis on data control, BIBOPP is now receiving international recognition with a MyData Award, presented to initiatives that use personal data ethically and transparently.

Health platform for prevention
BIBOPP (‘Citizens Moving with an Online Prevention Platform’) was launched by VITO in collaboration with Thomas More’s care pilot project LiCalab, general practitioners’ association Domus Medica, and diverse prevention partners. Through a validated questionnaire, the platform calculates a personal risk profile for chronic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Next, users can create an action plan based on local healthcare professionals and activities. Their data gets stored safely and users themselves determine whether they share the results with their GP or for scientific research.
The platform was first introduced in the Flemish Kempen region but is currently expanding across the whole of Flanders and soon even in the Netherlands. Moreover, BIBOPP is part of a bigger concept called ‘We Are’, in which citizens can reuse their personal health data across diverse health apps. That way, users will gain more agency on their health while controlling their personal data and privacy.
MyData Awards
MyData is an international organisation that strives for a fair, sustainable, and human-centered digital society. With the MyData Awards it rewards initiatives that carry out the same values. In the ‘Technology’ category, MyData recognises organisations who develop and utilize innovative personal data infrastructures and empowerment technologies.
According to the MyData Global Awards team BIBOPP stood out thanks to its focus on data security and the engagement of citizens and healthcare providers. “This award recognizes the demonstrable contributions of VITO to a more human-centric and ethical approach of personal data,” stated Alex Bowyer, Christopher Wilson, and Teemu Ropponen from MyData. The official ceremony will take place in June.
Data-driven health revolution
Our healthcare system is under enormous pressure, and we must find ways to keep people healthy for a longer time. For years VITO has already been working on data-driven, personalised prevention. Lifestyle strongly influences the risk of chronic diseases. By delivering people scientifically based insights and control over their own data, BIBOPP aims to contribute to better health literacy and preventative healthcare. Moreover, you also contribute a healthier community by choosing to share your data for scientific research. In this way, BIBOPP illustrates 'data solidarity'.
BIBOPP was one of the first applications that investigated the Solid technology features and aims to fully implement them within the WellData project.
WellData (Data Space for Prevention) is a project supported by Interreg Flanders-the Netherlands, co-financed by the province of Antwerp (Flanders) and the province of North-Brabant (the Netherlands). The WellData project will enable data sharing between Flemish and Dutch health applications.
