C3S: A climate information service to improve global biodiversity

Status: Afgelopen

VITO developed a climate service that compiles information and makes it available to stakeholders who focus on the improvement of biodiversity globally. This service is part of the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), which is part of the European Union’s earth observation programme.

Biodiversity and ecosystems under great pressure

Globally, biodiversity is under pressure due to climate change – as are the ecosystem services that are crucial to human well-being. The Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) supports society by making information and climate data files about several topics accessible.

All this information is readily available through the Climate Data Store (CDS) so stakeholders can assess and manage biodiversity loss correctly, for now and in the future. As part of the C3S framework, VITO developed a climate service to support those stakeholders.

Supporting stakeholders in the fight against biodiversity loss

The goal of this service is to counter the global biodiversity loss. The availability of current and future bioclimate indicators and interactive applications allows stakeholders (such as natural preservation organisations, policymakers, scientists and private companies) to examine the climate impact on biodiversity or assess how suitable the future climate in an area will be for endangered species.

As part of this climate service, we:

  • compile an extensive dataset of bioclimate indicators

  • develop interactive applications

  • co-create with biodiversity experts

  • support the quantification of the climate impact on biodiversity and ecosystem services

  • set up global preservation measures
