Map-it CCU: Flemish intercluster project develops decision-support tool for carbon capture and utilisation

The Map-it CCU project, a VLAIO intercluster COOCK+ initiative supported by the spearhead clusters Catalisti and FLUX50, introduces an innovative decision-support tool for carbon capture and utilisation (CCU). Developed within CAPTURE, the tool responds to the growing demand from Flemish companies for a structured overview of feasible CCU technologies and value chains, as part of their sustainability roadmaps and their pursuit of CO₂ neutrality.

Holistic value chain approach

What sets Map-it CCU apart is its value chain perspective: the tool not only evaluates individual technologies, but also highlights their role and impact within different scenarios and sectors. This provides a system-wide framework that enables companies to make informed decisions and fully exploit the transformative potential of CCUS technologies.

“By collecting, centralising and translating knowledge about CCUS technologies and value chains, we want to provide industry players with the necessary guidance to achieve tangible CO₂ reductions,” says Miet Van Dael (VITO). “Our approach is aimed at creating impact in the Flemish industry, but the methodology is equally applicable internationally.”

Knowledge sharing via CAPTURE Academy

In addition to the tool, the project also offers training activities. Within the CAPTURE Academy, a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) has been developed on CCU technologies. This online course provides an in-depth and accessible introduction to the entire value chain of CO₂ capture, purification, conditioning and conversion. The modules have been created by a multidisciplinary team of professors, researchers and industry experts, designed to be both academically rigorous and practically relevant.

Additional resources for professionals

The Map-it CCU project also makes available a variety of tools and knowledge resources for companies, researchers and policymakers active in the field of carbon capture and utilisation:
