Sortbat and VITO launch Xbat.ai: a joint venture in smart battery sorting technology
Tienen/Mol, Belgium – As the number of battery-powered devices continues to rise, efficient and safe battery sorting becomes increasingly vital. Xbat.ai, a joint venture between Sortbat (60%) – the European leader in battery sorting – and VITO (40%) – the Belgian research institute for sustainable technologies – has unveiled a revolutionary sorting system that leverages artificial intelligence (AI) and X-ray technology.

This innovative technology enables the sorting of all types of household batteries – from button cells to battery packs – in a semi-automated, safe, and cost-efficient manner. By leveraging AI and X-ray technology, all battery types are accurately identified and sorted, regardless of their chemical composition, size, or shape.
Manual sorting is no longer sufficient
The number and diversity of battery types are increasing rapidly, making manual sorting both challenging and hazardous. In particular, the growing variation within Li-ion batteries adds complexity and heightens safety risks during the sorting process. Xbat.ai’s new sorting system changes this with the world’s unique AI-driven X-ray solution for battery sorting.
Technology in action
Xbat.ai’s sorting machine is operational at Sortbat in Tienen. Both partners continue to collaborate intensively on further developing and refining the technology. But that’s not all: Xbat.ai also aims to apply AI and X-ray technology to other innovative machines in the sector.
A scalable solution for sorting facilities worldwide
Xbat.ai’s technology is ready for worldwide deployment in sorting facilities. This technology sets a new standard in the battery sorting sector, significantly improving safety, cost-efficiency, and output.
