UAntwerpen and VITO are working out a scenario in which fewer vaccines are lost.
COVID vaccines are a very precious commodity today. Everyone wants them, and quickly. However, the way in which the vaccines are currently distributed from the pharmaceutical companies to the public leads to a loss of around 3% of vaccines and also means that 140 hospital staff have to work full-time on these vaccines every day. This is at a time when hospital staff are already under heavy work pressure. UAntwerpen and research centre VITO investigated a scenario in which the vaccines would no longer be distributed via the hospitals, but would go directly to the vaccination centres. This would not only free up hands in hospitals, but would also ensure that less vaccine would be lost and thus more people could receive the vaccine sooner.
