RAWFILL stands for RAW materials recovered from landFILLs. The region of north-west Europe is home to approximately 100,000 waste storage sites. Valuable raw materials can be found on these landfill sites. These raw materials can be brought back into the circular economy via landfill mining. There are no reliable data available today regarding the potential of recovering raw materials from waste storage sites. As a result, the governments and the owners of the landfill sites are not able to make the right decisions. There is not even a standardised methodology in place for evaluating landfill sites and arranging these according to their economic potential.
The aim of RAWFILL is to develop a method for compiling an extensive inventory of landfill sites. Geophysical studies will be used to collect any data that are missing. A toolbox will be developed to arrange the waste storage sites according to a standardised methodology.
Eight partners from four European countries are working together on the RAWFILL project. This project is financed with a budget of 2.29 million euros within the Interreg North-West Europe programme.
