By capturing CO2 before it leaves the factory chimney, we prevent the carbon dioxide from being released into the air. Another way is to extract CO2 directly from the air. The technology for both systems already exists, but the big question is how we can make that technology cheaper and more effective.
If we can 'harvest' CO2, we need to go a step further and investigate what we could sustainably use the captured CO2 for. We can use it to make bricks (carbstone), but we could also use it to produce non-fossil fuels. VITO is working very hard on carrying out research into the possibilities that CO2 could offer us in this way.
