The Blue Cluster is spearheading sustainable and innovative development within the blue economy. Defined as the “sustainable use of ocean resources to benefit economies, livelihoods, and ocean ecosystem health,” the blue economy encompasses a wide range of activities including maritime shipping, fishing and aquaculture, coastal tourism, renewable energy, water desalination, undersea cabling, marine genetic resources, and biotechnology.
S+T+ARTS4WATERII: a seedbed for innovation
S+T+ARTS4WATERII combines art, technology and science and is committed to address the complex environmental and societal challenges faced by Europe’s ports and port cities. This project, coordinated by VITO, enhances collaborative artistic research, creation and innovation in different port cities and their related ecosystems and industries across eight countries.
A total of 20 residencies, facilitated by the 10 consortium partners, will be realized within this project. The winning artists of these residencies will be announced soon. The Blue Cluster is involved in the residency of the port of Ostend in Belgium: coastal culture and science at sea.
The port of Ostend: a hub of innovation and tradition
The Port of Ostend, nestled within the vibrant coastal city of Ostend in the West Flanders province of Belgium, holds a unique position. It is the only port in Belgium situated amidst a bustling tourist area with sandy beaches and broad boulevards. This port has a rich tradition of fishery, now evolving alongside the changing marine ecosystem.
Beyond its commercial role, Ostend’s port area is a crucial science hub driving blue economy innovation. The port stands out for its focus on marine research and sustainable practices, particularly around circularity, sustainable water management and bioengineering.
Involving artists in the blue economy
Artists can play a pivotal role in addressing water-related challenges through public engagement, awareness and communication. They can create impactful works that highlight the importance of sustainable practices in port operations and the broader blue economy. Supporting the creativity and communicative power of artists can lead to new and impactful innovations, benefiting both the blue economy and society.
Integrating art into port areas and maritime projects can enrich the cultural landscape, transforming ports into vibrant cultural spaces as well as functional hubs. Collaborative projects with artists can strengthen community ties and foster a sense of pride and ownership among local populations regarding their maritime heritage and future.
Art projects can emphasize the importance of sustainability and environmental stewardship, encouraging both industry stakeholders and the public to adopt greener practices. Artists can bring attention to specific environmental issues affecting ports and marine environments, such as pollution, habitat destruction and climate change impacts.
Artistic interventions can influence policy by providing compelling visual and experiential evidence of the need for sustainable practices and innovative solutions in the blue economy. Collaborative art projects can form the basis of advocacy campaigns that lobby for greater investment in sustainable maritime infrastructure and policies.
Benefits of collaborating with the S+T+ARTS4WATER community
The collaboration with the S+T+ARTS4WATER community can bring fresh perspectives, innovative solutions, and enhanced public engagement to maritime and port-related projects. Specifically, these partnerships can lead to:
- Innovative Solutions: Creative approaches to problem-solving can yield innovative solutions for sustainability challenges in the maritime sector.
- Economic Opportunities: Integrating art into port areas can create new economic opportunities through blue tourism and recreational activities, attracting visitors and boosting local economies.
Through these collaborations, the Blue Cluster aims to promote sustainability, innovation, and public engagement in the maritime sector, driving forward the blue economy's development for the benefit of all.
