VITO, a pioneering research organization, is dedicated to creating significant impact in three domains: sustainable resources, climate and sustainable living environment. One of our initiatives focuses on developing and advancing clean water technologies, including nature-based solutions to ensure a reliable supply of clean water.

To make every home in Flanders more sustainable, Woningpas is stepping up its game with a new feature aimed at accelerating the uptake of heat pumps in a community-driven manner. This latest initiative is a key part of the Horizon Europe initiative Demo-BLog, a European project that aims to modernise building data management and promote sustainable practices.
An important milestone has been reached in the journey towards sustainable products in the European Union: on 18 July 2024, the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) came into force. VITO/EnergyVille has been actively involved in this journey over the years, working with key stakeholders on this regulation that aims to make sustainable products the norm across Europe.
VITO and ILVO have formalised their collaboration with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This commitment aims to enhance their partnership and strengthen their research efforts to create a greater impact on agro-food and environmental issues.
This month, the CHERISH2O project (CHEmical industry water Reuse In a Sustainable Harbour) kicks off in the Port of Antwerp. The Port of Antwerp-Bruges, VITO, essenscia, VMM, and Antea Group are exploring the feasibility of purifying industrial wastewater from chemical companies for large-scale reuse. They’re not doing this alone: 12 companies are participating in the research project. By producing process water from wastewater streams, the companies aim to reduce their water consumption, helping the industry mitigate risks of water shortages, particularly during droughts, while also safeguarding drinking water supplies for the public.
With VITO4STARTERS, VITO supports start-ups with strong concepts around sustainability. Through this interactive pitch competition, VITO shares its network and technical expertise with entrepreneurs in various sectors, such as health, energy, water, materials, chemistry and earth observation. The final of the second VITO4STARTERS competition in 2024 took place at the Love Tomorrow Conference on 25 July in the inspiring decors of Tomorrowland in Boom. From this, three winners emerged with innovative and sustainable business concepts: Breed Bio, Cylib and D-CRBN.
In September 2024, vibration trucks will once again be circulating in Dessel and Mol and, for the first time, in Retie. VITO is deploying the trucks to map the deep subsoil in the wide surroundings of the Balmatt site in Mol.
On Sunday 8 September, we welcomed around 150 local residents to our information session about the upcoming 3D seismic survey campaign, which is set to begin this week.
Port of Antwerp-Bruges and VITO examined the potential of the Antwerp chemical cluster to incorporate recyclates to replace fossil raw materials. They analysed how the use of recycled and renewable raw materials could be increased, aiming to anchor the Antwerp industrial cluster in a sustainable, resilient, and future-proof manner as a vital part of European industry.
NDC support center
About the NDC Support Center (NDC SC)
Countries worldwide are updating their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to meet the climate action goals set at the 2015 Paris COP meeting. To ensure these updates set out the correct policies and achievable goals, countries must enhance their knowledge of energy production and use.
To address these challenges, AFREC (Energy Agency of the African Union) and VITO, with funding from the Government of Flanders, established the NDC Support Center (NDC SC). This initiative provides long-term support to help countries develop comprehensive climate and energy plans within the NDC framework through improved energy statistics and advanced climate modelling.
Moving to the next phase
After three years of successful capacity-building activities in Malawi, Morocco, Mozambique, and Uganda, the NDC SC is ready to take the next steps. And so in June, we had the honour of hosting the AFREC delegation at VITO. The visit spanned several strategic sessions focused on advancing the NDC SC’s objectives. Our collaborative efforts centered on:
- Developing a joint strategy: Building upon the initial phase’s outcomes to create a roadmap for future initiatives.
- Enhancing knowledge and capacity: Strengthening energy statistics and climate modelling capabilities crucial for NDC development.
- Supporting policy creation: Helping countries create fair and feasible policies within the NDC framework.
- Fostering collaboration: Encouraging partnerships between participating countries and stakeholders.
Throughout the visit, discussions were highly productive, resulting in a comprehensive strategy that translates strategic objectives into actionable steps.
Upcoming: the NDC Support Center Forum
To reflect on the project’s achievements and discuss opportunities for extensions and alignments, the NDC Support Center will host a high-level forum in Brussels, Belgium, on October 1-2, 2024. This exclusive gathering will unite African Excellencies, African Union representatives, and delegations from Malawi, Mozambique, and Uganda.
Together, participants will engage in discussions to assess the impact of the NDC SC’s initiatives over the past three years and share insights into national energy and climate strategies. Additionally, the forum will mark the introduction of a collaborative strategy by AFREC and VITO, setting the stage for stakeholder consultations and fostering partnerships.
Consult the agenda of the NDC Support Center Forum
Please note that attendance is by invitation only, coordinated by AFREC and VITO.

Developing new chemicals and materials requires meeting various regulations and standards, which currently vary from country to country and sometimes even within regions. The European SSbD4CheM project aims to address this by providing a standardised approach applicable across all EU member states in the coming years. The project's goal is to introduce screening and testing methods for safe and sustainable material development.
Earlier this month, Belgium’s future energy landscape reached a new milestone with the kick-off of the GALILEO project. Coordinated by VITO/EnergyVille, this groundbreaking initiative brings together leading academic and industrial players to tackle one of the most pressing challenges of our time: making the electricity grid more flexible and resilient in the face of rapid decarbonisation. Funded by the Energy Transition Fund, GALILEO promises to unlock the untapped potential of industrial flexibility to drive innovation and sustainability across the country.
VITO takes sustainability very seriously and is active in the start-up community through its own spin-offs. Through VITO4STARTERS, VITO supports and encourages young companies that contribute to more sustainability with technical knowledge, a proof-of-concept and/or access to infrastructure.
